What I’ve been doing lately…
It’s been awhile since my last post. Certain projects were developing in secrecy, some of them awaited the green light, and there was a lot of producing going on next to the actual performing. So… what’s coming up?
The Paradox Of War (working title)
One of the highlights so far, is a project I’m working on with Mike Wijdenbosch. We are producing a short film (2 – 3 min) about the paradox of war. Due to our common interest in the subject, and our background in martial arts, we feel close to the physical and philosophical aspects of violence: how it’s difficult to stay out of a fight when it imposes itself on you. For that reason, we found it self-evident to play in the short film as well.
This project is typically characterised by it’s ambitious ‘from-zero-to-crew’ structure. We started with an idea. We had no producer, no budget… only the need to make a new opening for dialogue about the violence-factory. Then we managed to bring people together who’re aiming for the same: we want to reach for an international audience, by making an audiovisual-poem that philosophies about reciprocity of war. It’s amazing to make that the calling card of everyone’s work, skill, and involvement.
We don’t have a release date yet. The project will meet it’s post-production in June. We’re aiming for a festival release after this summer, whereafter an online release is anticipated.
In this project, I can take some rest from producing, and just focus on acting. I’ll be playing Menelaos and Achilles in the graduation play of Margreet Derks. It’s pretty different from the play we’ve worked on previous year. Whereas Bikker, Bikkes & Bikje was fully contemporary, Ifigeneia Koningskind has roots in classic theatre. However, the subject is timeless.

This is the graduation project of Bart Martens, an artistic film director. His work will be about a young man who’s a human, and a beast… or just a beast… or both after all. Something we should or shouldn’t be the judge of. I’ll be playing this beast-human-kinda character, whom’s struggles I’ve experienced by improvisation. Now that his struggles are scripted, we can start shooting this week.
Bart will graduate this summer after a private premiere of his film. I’m expecting an online release after the event.
This project might be an unconscious consequence of the other three. You see, fear connects all these projects in terms of source emotion and inspiration. I want to take this emotion somewhere completely different in a soloperformance. I want to take away the heaviness that fear contains. I want to give it a stage, and open space for messing around with it. I want us not to be haunted by it, but to acknowledge it as one of the four emotions that defines us.
I will start performing this summer. Specific dates have yet to be announced.
